A Guru (Sanskrit:
गुरू,
guru) is a teacher in Hinduism, Buddhism, and
Sikhism. Based on a long line of philosophical
understanding as to the importance of knowledge, the
guru is seen in these religions as a sacred conduit, or
a way to self-realization. "Guru" also refers in
Sanskrit to Brihaspati, preceptor of the gods, foremost
in all branches of learning, venerated alike by the gods
and the asuras.
